Events for 2017!

The following events are sponsored by Friends of Eagle Nest Lake and Cimarron Canyon State Parks in conjunction with New Mexico State Parks and other entities as indicated.

January 28, 2017 (last Saturday in January): Ice Fishing Tournament at Eagle Nest Lake sponsored by Friends of Eagle Nest Lake and Cimarron Canyon State Parks and Eagle Nest Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and New Mexico State Parks.

State Parks presents: Learning More about the Wild Turkey!
  • Join us for an informative program on the Wild Turkey
  • Topics include:
    • Turkey Identification
    • Sounds of the Wild Turkey
    •  Habitat Conservation of the Wild Turkey

  • Bring water and snacks and be prepared for anything that could happen

May 13, 2017 Children’s Fishing Derby at Gavel Pit Lakes, Maverick Campground, Cimarron Canyon State Parks.

  • Registration begins at 10 AM

  • Fish till 1 PM.

  • No fee, but registration and waiver required to be signed by parent or guardian of children participating in the Fishing Derby.

  • Open for all children ages 11 and younger, who will receive: T-shirts compliments of Friends of Eagle Nest Lake and Cimarron Canyon State Parks.

  • Prizes for biggest fish caught in each age group.

  • Regular Park fees and NM Fishing Regulations apply.

  • Only residents and nonresidents age 11 and under may fish without a valid NM Fishing License.

June 1, 2017 Eagle Nest Lake Shore Cleanup -- Join in this 3-hour venture for "treasure" around the shore of Eagle Nest Lake. Following the "hunt", treasure hunters are treated to complimentary ice cream cone at Golden Eagle RV Park.

  • Bring rubber boots and gloves for your personal use.

  • Treasure (trash) bags will be provided.

  • Meet at Eagle Nest Lake State Park Visitor Center at 9 AM.

  • A NM State Park Pass is required for parking at Eagle Nest Lake State Park Visitor Center.

June 3, 2017: National Trails Day hike on Clear Creek Trail in Cimarron Canyon.

  • Meet at trailhead at 9:30 AM. No fee but registration/required from participant before hike begins.

  •  Limited parking at Clear Creek Trailhead not requiring NM State Park Permit/Pass, so carpooling to trailhead is recommended.

  • A GAIN (Gaining Access Into Nature) Permit is required to hike Clear Creek Trail. Click here for info. (http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/conservation/state-game-commission-lands)

August 12, 2017:  River Roundup in Cimarron Canyon State Park sponsored by Friends of Eagle Nest Lake and Cimarron Canyon State Parks and Moreno Valley Trekkers in cooperation with NM State Parks. Volunteers walk the banks of the Cimarron River looking for "treasures" aka trash.

  • 8:30 AM Register. Location in Cimarron Canyon TBD

  • Gloves, safety vests and "treasure" bags will be provided.

  • Volunteers should bring their own rubber boots for gleaning "treasures" out of the river.

  • Complimentary refreshments provided by local businesses served about noon.

  • A NM State Park Pass is required for parking in Day Use Areas, so carpool if possible.

January 1, 2018 Polar Bear Challenge at Eagle Nest Lake State Park.

  • Polar Bear Stomp - a "First Day Hike" on one of the flat trails at Eagle Nest Lake State Park followed by cookies and a cup of hot chocolate!

    • Meet at 10:00 am at the Eagle Nest Lake State Park Visitor Center

    • Hot Chocolate and Cookies indoors following hike for everyone to enjoy

    • Dress appropriate for weather conditions at the time.

    • Snow depth will determine type of footwear needed, i.e. snowshoes, or hiking boots.

  • Closest to the Pin Disk Golf following Polar Bear Stomp

  • Polar Bear Plunge depends on whether water and ices conditions permit

  • Additional info re Polar Bear Challenge events:

    • Parking at Eagle Nest Lake State Park Visitor Center requires a NM State Park Parking Pass.

    • No event fee for the Polar Bear Events, but registration and event liability waivers must be signed.
